I am in the process of knitting an endless Koigu Keepsake Shawl. The yarn was purchased in August and I have only used three of the thirteen skeins alloted to the project. I don't know exactly why it is taking me so long. The last one I knit flew off of the needles, but this one seems to be dragging her feet. Maybe it is the monotony of knitting the same pattern for 15 skeins of sock-weight yarn. Could it be??
On the plus side, I am in love with the colorway; a custom creation by Matt of Threadbear. There are deep reds, electric oranges and several dark rainbow shades. This is definately an intense shawl, uh...I mean throw...uh... Ok, I have no idea how I will use this gigantic piece of fabric, but isn't it pretty so far??
I have changed the pattern to make a full mitered square (with four decreased points instead of a single point as directed), hoping that this adaptation will solve the qualms that I have with the asymmetric qaulity that comes out of the original pattern. Yes, there is OCD in my family, why do you ask?
The name of the pattern keeps me knitting away on this monster. A "keepsake" is something that will be treasured for years to come, if a person gets around to finishing it. Noone (except me and maybe also whoever is reading this blog) treasures a mountain of tangled yarn that takes up residence on the chair nearest the television set.
Writing about this project has inspired me to pick up the exceedingly long circular needles, heavily weighed down by hundreds of yards of Koigu. It is not interest that compels me, but the idea that someone might actually read this and ask about my progress on some day in the future. I begin for my own reasons, but I only finish under threat of disapproval. Sad.
